Kaffara Episode 39: Scene: Living Room
Mom: (Firmly) Sit down, child. I need to talk to you.
Son: (Hesitant) No, Mom, I have to go for some work.
Mom: (Insistent) You can do your work later. I need to talk about Zoya.
Sit down.
Son: (Reluctantly) Go ahead.
Mom: (Sighs) Look, child, it’s common for there to be disagreements
between mothers-in-law, daughters-in-law, and sisters-in-law. You’ve seen it
yourself, right? Like between your aunt and me, we never got along.
Son: (Nods) Yes.
Mom: But your uncle? He never took anyone’s side. He always just stayed
neutral.
Son: (Defensive) So, when did I take Zoya’s side?
Mom: (Gently) Yes, you didn’t, and that was right. But telling her to
leave like that... it was wrong, wasn’t it?
Son: (Frustrated) But Mom, you started the argument.
Mom: (Firmly) Yes, I can say whatever I want, child, I’m her
mother-in-law. But you shouldn’t have told her to leave like that. No, child,
don’t speak to your wife that way.
Son: (Softly) If I hadn’t stopped her, she wouldn’t have stopped, she
would’ve left.
Mom: (Warmly) Give respect to your wife. After all, she is the eldest
daughter-in-law of this house.
Son: (Reluctantly) Yes, Mom.
Mom: (Reassuringly) The one Salman chose for himself is just… but
you’ll see, Zoya will always be the one respected as the eldest and only
daughter-in-law of this house.
Son: (Confused) You think I should talk to Zoya?
Mom: (Smiling) What should you talk to Zoya about? She’s already won my
heart by staying quiet about your mistake. If you have even the slightest
regard for your mother, you’ll never say anything to her in front of anyone
again.
Son: (Sighs) Thank you, Mom.
Mom: (Encouraging) Now go and take her somewhere. That poor girl must
be feeling down.
Son: (Nods) I will take her out, but tell me something, what was Salman
saying to you?
Mom: (Dismissive) That same story, “get me married, get me married.” He
has nothing in his hands, but he wants me to get him a bride.
Son: (Laughs) That’s actually great news, Mom! You should go ahead with
his marriage. You won’t get a better deal than this.
Mom: (Sighs) You're not doing the right thing. Sitara, come here
quickly.
Kaffara Episode 39: (Sitara enters the room)
Sitara: (Curious) Yes, Mom, what is it?
Mom: (Frustrated) What do you want, after all? Was a month so heavy on
you that you discussed having a wedding in a week?
Sitara: (Confused) Discussed? I did? With whom?
Mom: (Accusingly) Salman is now saying to get married in a week instead
of a month. Why? A week? You’ve been coming and going with him daily, you must
have convinced him.
Sitara: (Defensive) Did you ask Salman for an earlier marriage?
Son: (Suspicious) She must have said it, Mr. Shaukat. Otherwise, why
would Najma bring up her name? Is your aunt telling the truth? Tell me, Sitara.
I need an answer.
Sitara: (Upset) I need an answer too! Why haven’t you been picking up my
calls? Speak up!
(Another
voice interrupts from offstage, it's Salar, angrily walking into the room.)
Salar: (Demanding) Why have you come here? I told you I need an answer.
Son: (Confused) Oh, now when you called, you should answer him too.
Salar: (Firmly) No, not her. I need an answer from you. I heard that
you've again arranged an engagement for my fiancée.
Mom: (Calmly) She is not your fiancée. You left her behind and left.
Salar: (Defensively) I didn’t leave. I went to work. I’m back now. I
asked you for a date, and you... I gave my word, and if you remember, you gave
me your word too. So how could you back out? Didn’t you care a little about me
at all?
